Dr Jai Sungaran is committed to helping advance the field of orthopaedic surgery in several critical ways: first, by undertaking research endeavors to study specific topics and further his knowledge, and also by training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Research Projects
In 2019, Dr Sungaran adopted an online database to help gather data on his patients to further his research projects. This data is de-identified and completely secure through a system called REDcap.
Dr Sungaran’s patients will be asked to fill out questionnaires during their initial visit and follow up visits as well as visits with physiotherapists and hand therapists. Dr Sungaran and his colleagues will input the appropriate measurements directly into the online database, making the information more centralized and easier for his research assistants to assess.
Dr Sungaran has partnered with the Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Research (AIMS), an organization which enables surgeons to develop both their surgical and research skills.
Dr Sungaran’s Current Research Projects
- Site Supervisor for Concord Hospital. Part of the CROSSFIRE research group. (Combined Randomised and Observational Study for Fractures in the distal Radius in the Elderly)
- Does a Hand Strength exercise program improve grip strength in the elderly with a distal radius fracture? A randomised controlled trial (Published 2020)
- Reverse-end-to-side nerve transfer for restoration of hand function
- Arthroscopic TFCC repair
- ASA grade as a predictor of pre-surgery anaesthesia time. Presented at the AOA Annual Scientific Meeting in Cairns 2016. Paper in submission
- Patient outcome measures as a measure of satisfaction post thumb basal joint arthroplasty
AOA Accredited Fellowship
Part of this ongoing research will be handled by Dr Sungaran’s fellows. These are qualified orthopaedic or plastic surgeons undertaking further training by working with Dr Sungaran for a short period of time (approximately six to 12 months). Between Dr Sungaran and Dr John Trantalis, a shoulder and elbow surgeon at his practice, they supervise an Australian Orthopaedic Association Accredited Fellowship program in the subspecialties of advanced arthroscopy and upper limb surgery.
As part of the training program, Dr Sungaran’s fellows are developing advanced skills in the assessment and management of shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist conditions with an emphasis on advanced arthroscopic techniques. A research project and preparing papers for presentation and publication are also key parts of the fellowship program.
Dr Sungaran takes his role as educator very seriously. He is excited to work alongside these talented fellows and help ensure they receive the same high level of training that he had during his first years in practice.
